1. Here 君子=圣贤有位者, "the sage and worthy,who has position", i.e., who occupied the throne, and小人=圣贤无立者, "the sage and worthy, who has no position". We might suppose that the influence of the former would be more permanent, but Mencius is pleased to say their influence lasts the same time. 泽 is to be taken as= "influence", it being understood to be of a beneficial character.
